1973-74 O-Pee-Chee Craig Patrick #52 California Golden Seals
This is the card every serious hockey family lineage collector wants, the 1973-74 O-Pee-Chee Craig Patrick #52 California Golden Seals, a second-year card of a future Hockey Hall of Fame builder and a direct link to the most famous surname in hockey. This is the true Canadian O-Pee-Chee issue from 1973-74 with bold red borders and bilingual backs, and it features Craig Patrick during his playing days before he became legendary off the ice. Grandson of Lester Patrick and son of Lynn Patrick, Craig brought impeccable bloodlines to the struggling Seals franchise. The back tells his story in both languages, showing 20 goals and 22 assists for 42 points in 71 games in 1972-73, solid production for a checking right winger on an expansion team, and noting he was the effective player who doesn’t forget his defensive duties. Of course history would prove his greatest contributions came later as Assistant Coach of the 1980 Miracle on Ice gold medal team, as General Manager of the New York Rangers and as architect of two Stanley Cup championships with the Pittsburgh Penguins drafting and building around Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr, achievements that earned him induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame as a builder and into the US Hockey Hall of Fame. Vintage collectors prize this second-year card because his true rookie is the 1971-72 issue and this 1973-74 card is far harder to find well-centered with red borders intact. The front shows Patrick in the bright Seals yellow and green home jersey with the stylized Seals script, a classic defunct-team aesthetic adored by neon-style jersey collectors and California hockey historians. This is a Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual back card, marked O. P. C. PRINTED IN CANADA with French translation of the bio and a whimsical Craig Patrick cartoon shouting from a megaphone, it is not a Topps US version and not a puzzle back. Front centering is approximately 60/40 side to side slightly favoring left, with reasonably balanced top to bottom, which is above average for this card. Corners are lightly softened, top left and bottom right showing minor white ticks under the sleeve, and the red border exhibits faint edge roughness on the upper right but no major chips. Photo clarity is excellent, with rich yellows and no surface indentations. The back dark stock appears clean with uniform cocoa-brown toning, crisp black print on the stats and biography, and no wax staining, writing or erasure. No creases or wrinkles are detected under bright light. The conservative grade reflects small corner wear and border texture rather than any creasing or surface loss, leaving it a very presentable runner for a Hall of Fame builder collection.
