1973-74 O-Pee-Chee Bobby Clarke #50 All-Star Philadelphia Flyers

$28.00

This is the key card of the group and one of the most desirable non-rookie singles in the entire set: the 1973-74 O-Pee-Chee Bobby Clarke #50 All-Star Philadelphia Flyers card, capturing the Flin Flon Bomber at the exact moment he became the face of hockey’s most feared franchise. Corner wear is light but consistent, with the lower left corner showing the most rounding and small white fibre exposure, the lower right slightly blunted, and the top two corners moderately soft rather than sharp. 1973-74 O-Pee-Chee Bobby Clarke #50 All-Star Philadelphia Flyers This is the key card of the group and one of the most desirable non-rookie singles in the entire set: the 1973-74 O-Pee-Chee Bobby Clarke #50 All-Star Philadelphia Flyers card, capturing the Flin Flon Bomber at the exact moment he became the face of hockey's most feared franchise. The front pairs the bright yellow All-Star West design with a candid game photo of a young, curly-haired Clarke battling a St. Louis Blues forward along the boards, all of it wrapped in the red O-Pee-Chee border and topped by the '72-73 NHL All-Stars, West banner. The timing of this issue is what makes it matter. The bilingual English and French back opens by stating that Bobby won the Hart Trophy the previous season and was the first West Division player to be so honoured, and it goes on to note that he was second in NHL scoring and already held most Philadelphia scoring marks. The statistics line confirms the breakout: 78 games, 37 goals, 67 assists, 104 points and 80 penalty minutes in 1972-73, his first 100-point season. The cartoon panel jokes that Bobby is playing with a lucrative five-year contract, a very seventies flex. Clarke was a player nobody expected to last, having fallen to the second round of the 1969 draft because of concerns about his Type 1 diabetes, and he answered by becoming the relentless competitive heart of a team that won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 1974 and 1975 as the Broad Street Bullies. He had already announced himself internationally the previous autumn during the 1972 Summit Series, where his infamous slash on Valeri Kharlamov remains one of the most debated moments in Canadian hockey history. Three Hart Trophies, a Selke, more than 1,200 career points, a Hockey Hall of Fame induction in 1987 and a lengthy front-office career keep his vintage cardboard in constant demand, and this 1973-74 All-Star issue is the single most recognizable Clarke card of his peak playing years. This example is printed on the light tan paper stock and carries a genuine Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual back, with the French translation running beneath the English biography, the caption "Bobby a un contrat lucratif de 5 ans" under the cartoon, and "PRINTED IN CANADA" at the lower right; this set does not feature puzzle backs. The front holds strong eye appeal with saturated yellow and red inks. Corner wear is light but consistent, with the lower left corner showing the most rounding and small white fibre exposure, the lower right slightly blunted, and the top two corners moderately soft rather than sharp. Edge chipping appears as fine white speckling along the right border and along the top edge above the banner, typical of hand-collected cards from this era. Centering measures approximately 60/40 to the left and close to 50/50 top to bottom. The surface is clean under angled light with no creases, no wrinkles, no bends and no scratches through the photo window, and the tan reverse is bright with clear text, no writing, no gum staining and no tape. Grade Estimate: EX 5
