1971 O-Pee-Chee Partridge Family #40 "Working Out a Song" Puzzle Back Yellow Series 1 Card #40, "Working Out a Song," drops fans right into the creative chaos of a Partridge Family rehearsal, instruments everywhere, the whole family crowded into their cramped garage studio hammering out the next hit single. It's exactly the kind of behind-the-scenes candid moment that made this set so appealing to kids in 1971, offering a glimpse of the band "at work" rather than posed for a magazine cover. The Partridge Family phenomenon exploded almost overnight, with the show's fictional band scoring genuine chart success, including the number-one single "I Think I Love You" in late 1970, and this 55-card yellow-bordered Series 1 set moved quickly to capture that momentum. This card's reverse belongs to "Puzzle No. 2," one segment of a larger jigsaw image spread across a subset of cards in the series, a design gimmick used across many entertainment card sets of the era to encourage kids to keep buying packs until they completed the picture. This example is the O-Pee-Chee issue, Canada's counterpart to the U. S. Topps release, marked "Ptd. in Canada" at the bottom of the reverse. OPC runs were notably smaller, making this variant tougher to find than the U. S. Topps card and a nice target for Canadian non-sport collectors. the front image displays good color saturation, though there is noticeable corner wear at the top-left, showing both rounding and whitening consistent with handling. A faint diagonal press line is visible across the upper portion of the photo area, more a light handling mark from the original printing sheet than a true crease, but worth disclosing plainly. A small dark mark is present near one bottom corner of the yellow border, likely residual sticker adhesive rather than damage to the card stock itself. Centering is reasonably balanced despite the corner softness. The reverse puzzle segment is clean, with no writing or stains, and the card retains good structural integrity with no bends. Given the corner wear and the handling mark on the front, a conservative raw grade of EX 5 reflects this card honestly. A fun mid-set puzzle piece for collectors chasing the full picture or simply loving the candid "band practice" aesthetic. Grade Estimate: EX 5
